First Poem — Lady Khadijah (peace be upon her) After Hearing the Description of the Prophet from Waraqah ibn Nawfal

Lady Khadijah al-Kubra (peace be upon her) composed these verses upon hearing the description of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) from Waraqah ibn Nawfal.

How long must I conceal my longing while my eyelids betray it? And how long must I restrain my yearning while my very limbs hold it captive?

My heart has been unkind to me, for another has claimed its possession — Oh, what grief! If only I were its master.

He who left me with nothing but the last breath of life has done no harm — for had he been generous with what remained, he would have surrendered it too.
